The Dark pigment melanin is produced in cells called melanocytes in response to irritants. This pigment is transported to cells in the top layers of our skin a process that is activated when the skin is exposed to sunlight for example. . The type and amount of melanin synthesized by the melanocyte and its distribution pattern in the surrounding skin cells determines the actual color of the skin.
"Dark spots" and other discolorations on the skin are due to a build-up of melanin when an irritating stimuli induces an over production of melanin. This process is similar for all persons of color.
